unij: YOU BET KID (DO NOT WANT)

Sooooooo

Have you guys heard about that Majora's Mask Creepypasta thing? The one that's super duper spooky? I have, the last couple days, but I didn't read it, because I never played Majora's Mask, so I figured I wouldn't really get the full experience of it. But today, I figured, oh why not, it'll be good for the lulz.

As I'm reading through this undeniably spooky thing, I do get some mild chills of "Wowwwww aaa do not want," but I figure I'm doing a pretty good job of not getting too freaked out.

Until, maybe halfway through the story, as the person is going into more and more detail about how this game and their computer is haunting them and controlling their movements, my internet suddenly goes out.

I noticed because AIM suddenly shuts down and can't reconnect. Since I already had the page for the story up, I could keep reading, so, well, I did. I called to my sister to check if her internet was having a problem (we had a very time-consuming wireless issue just yesterday, it could have happened again), but hers apparently worked fine.

As I finished the story, Mom told me to walk the dog. The Alternia House is on a hill with no sidewalks and sporadic lighting. It had gotten dark while I'd been reading, and, of all things, the fog had come in.

As you might be able to tell by me posting this, I was able to get the internet back running with a little fiddling, and nothing jumped me on the walk (though we did see a raccoon). The most noteworthy was that my iPod brought up both Ghostbusters and Great Bay Shrine on the walk, but it's still a delightful little peek into why Sarah is a derp who shouldn't read ghost stories |D

Oh loool that sounds freaky. XD

And man, I read the whole story, but I still don't really get the ending. /o_O\

Yeah, I definitely had trouble following it at more than one point =\ Possibly assisted by my aforementioned lack of Majora's Mask familiarity, but as a whole the timeline of things was pretty muddled.

Yeah, I haven't actually played the game, I just watched my little bro play it since he used to alllll the time when we were younger. Maybe actually playing it all would make it more cohesive, but I somewhat doubt it.

We were lied to.

In the description for JADUSABLE.WMV, Jadusable's roommate talks about how he was left with specific instructions for what to do with the information on his flash drive.
Truth.txt mentions how sorry he was that he got a single dorm in college because having another person around could have stopped him from becoming so obsessed with the game.

Truth.txt talks about how Ben would edit his videos and posts before they would go up on the web. Ben can apparently "spread" through the internet and filesharing methods. We are warned not to download any of the videos posted anywhere. Text documents should be safe. However, various instances of the word "believe" throughout the file are spelled with capitalizations in the word that highlight the word "LIE."

We are also told to completely disregard anything posted to the YouTube channel after September 12, the date at which Jadusable "quit" the internet. Ben can manipulate his computer and has access to his password and information. Anything after that date is an attempt to break free.

Needless to say, free.wmv and the download link to Truth.txt were posted three days past that date.

By becoming involved, by wanting to know the truth, by downloading Truth.txt and reading it, we freed Ben. We helped him spread. The creepypasta used our curiosity and assumed audience passivity and turned it around on us for one final sting

Yeah, the part about his roommate vs. the single room stuck out to me, and I did notice the LIE as well.

In other words: SEVEN DAAAAAAAAAAAYS

OHHHhhhkay, I knew it was something about Ben spreading via computer but was a little fuzzy on the details.

I was actually wondering how the game shows what actually happened to Ben IRL (so to speak), beyond the fact that he drowned, but maybe it doesn't bother with actually expanding on that and you're just supposed to guess?

I'm pretty sure the details behind what happened to the real Ben are left ambiguous. Whatever we imagine is worse than whatever the writer could come up with.

I noticed the roomie vs. single room thing too. That did stand out, but I definitely didn't put all the pieces together.

That said holy hell that is so creepy and I am so glad I was not reading that on my laptop.

Also, the fact that you have a Slender Man icon - not to mention the icon itself - terrifies me. 8D;;;

I didn't think the supernatural elements of the story were that great (computer hauntings? really?) but the videos were so incredibly well-done and the set-up for that final sting was great. Oh dear god, I still can't get over how in DDROWNED the statue gets closer -- not when it's out of Link's sight, but when it gets out of the player's sight. a;sdfjas; fuck that shit huadsadf.

Haha, I've been waiting for an excuse to use this icon. :D :D :D

Don't get me wrong, Majora's Mask is great (AND YOU SHOULD PLAY IT IF YOU CAN), but like... the whole point is that it is so much more disturbing than you would ever expect a Zelda game to be, and in really subtle ways.

Like, I played it when it was first released, and was like "FUCK THIS SHIT I'M TEN YEARS OLD," because it was too hard for me. And then I played it again a few months ago and was like "UUUUGHHHH SO CREEPY WHAT IS THIS SHIIIIT."

this whole thing just took all the creepiest elements and cranked them up to eleven.

From: [identity profile] universejuice.livejournal.com
I definitely would like to play it if I have the real chance, though I've just never owned the system for it, and I tend to get too distracted on the computer to use an emulator. I should probably look into a Let's Play, at the least.

Though I feel like I would feel better if I kept not knowing what that damn statue looks like

From: [identity profile] scientivity.livejournal.com
You should! Even if you can't play it yourself, it's still worth it to at least get the story. Majora's Mask is legitimately one of my favorite Zelda games.

THAT STATUE IS FUCKING CREEPY IN THE GAME, TOO. I mean, it's essentially glorified block and exists to sit on switches, but I just don't like looking at it.

ALSO BECAUSE I'M A MASOCHIST AND KEEP POPPING INTO THE YOUTUBE ACCOUNT AND TWITTER FEED: I'm 85% sure this whole story isn't finished yet.

If nothing else, I'd figure it's just fans of the original creepypasta that are keeping it going... though considering it's only been a few days since all this started, I wouldn't be all that surprised if there was more gonna happen 8D;;

Ambisagrus and A Wooden Palisade are doing a pretty great Majora's Mask LP that I've been following for a few months now. http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3307728 It's locked right now because the thread was getting a little weird (the bad kind of internet creepy) but these guys are pretty much the kings of Zelda LPs.

Also check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5Mf2mp6fms for two of the commercials for Majora's Mask. They're pretty damn frightening in their own right.

Oh, thanks, I'll have to look into that. My quest for decent LPs marches on!

Ahahahaahahahahah holy fuck why would you market something like that

Me too =D;;

I'm usually pretty good with reading, it's watching videos that really get to me (I couldn't even get through the second of the Slenderman videos), so I'll leave the game videos |D

Date: 2010-09-18 05:43 am (UTC)
kiaxet: (AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH)
From: [personal profile] kiaxet
Well yay |Db

I honestly can't do any of this stuff late at night - I keep thinking of it and freaking myself out and just. Not good things. |D

...why would you even watch the Slenderman videos o_o

Date: 2010-09-18 05:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] universejuice.livejournal.com
I was at school, and decided to just look into the whole thing about how Slenderman got going, because I thought it was hilarious that the internet could make their own urban legend over the course of a couple months |D I didn't get creeped out at all until actually trying to watch the videos and I was like "IT'S DARK AND SCHOOL IS IN A FOREST NOOOOOOO NO NO NO"

Date: 2010-09-18 05:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] deltashade.livejournal.com
So I guess I should actually follow this thing. I stopped paying attention when it got posted on SA as just text and the only stinger was BEN DROWNED. If it gets better, I'm in.

Date: 2010-09-18 05:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] universejuice.livejournal.com
It's basically "THIS KID IS HAUNTING ME THROUGH A GAME AND MY COMPUTER AND I'M GOING CRAAAAAAAAAAAAZY" so yeah, take it as you will.

Date: 2010-09-18 05:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] deltashade.livejournal.com
Yeah, the happy mask salesman at the end of DROWNED.wmv gave me a chill, but other than that I haven't seen anything too bad so far. I'm about to start jadusable.wmv.

From: [identity profile] universejuice.livejournal.com
Due to both broken internet at the time of reading, and also being a weenie, I haven't watched the videos yet. Which is probably for the best atm.

Date: 2010-09-18 05:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] deltashade.livejournal.com
Oh, hurr, right, you said that. It's. Probably for the best. Even without knowing the game, you'll definitely be able to tell that something's wrong.

I keep hearing about this but haven't checked it out.
