The pettiest and absolutely least important of all the things that are bothering me right now:

Yes, I know, I get it. Pokemon is basically glorified cockfighting. Hahahahahaha this is a hilarious thing to bring up, let us mention it and drive it into the ground of every single Let's Play ever made. There are so many more logical fallacies to focus in this story concept, guys. Let's talk about why Professors of these monsters never have more than three of them around, or why there are no actual hospitals for people, or the realization that certain Pokemon, like Alakazam, are hundreds of times smarter than any human yet for some reason still put up with us. These are much more interesting to consider. Cool? Cool.

I agree that Special does a much better job of handling some of the darker themes that other incarnations glaze over. Harder to work it into a game, I guess, but still satisfies a lot more questions.

Still, Pokedex entries are the official, relied-upon encyclopedia for all Pokemon data. They're issued by the Professors studying the species, you'd think they'd make sure to cut down on some of the too outlandish observations.

Now that I think of it, all the Starter Pokemon must be bred entirely in captivity, judging by the fact that you never, ever, ever see any of them in the wild. The same for Eevees, as well. Leads me to wonder if Eevee's evolutionary routes are a matter of carefully monitored breeding habits.

Yeah, I think the games are simply limited by the system and formula they use, and you can't really blame them for that. I think clever Let's Plays and such find ways to build off and extrapolate from the basics the game gives them, which is what Special does. I mean, you can't argue in Special that it's just humans abusing poor animals since the humans themselves are in almost as much danger and the trainer is a valid target.

True, but keep in mind that these are the same professors who foist their life's work on ten year olds. Actually, again Special does a good job of actually using the pokedex entries to explain things, and you're right, they're a comedy goldmine.

I think it was said somewhere that Eevee's are very rare, and given how domesticated they seem I don't find it hard to believe that they've been kept as pets for so long that they look totally different from how the used to in the wild. Maybe Eevee ancestors looked more like Zigzagoons. I would definitely buy the whole selective breeding idea, since they're the only species with so many specialized evolutions. The starter's are trickier, since there's no indication in the games that every trainer goes to Oak/Elm/whoever to get their first pokemon, and indeed Wally from gen 3 shows that a lot probably go to the local gym leader.

I think with the Starter's they're probably just very rare, since their ultimate evolutions would likely be the top of any food chain, and many Profs do breed them in captivity for research purposes.
