unij: YOU BET KID (Just One More Minute)

Hmm. Okay, all you animation people on the flist, feel free to correct me here, but I've just been thinking.

In Disney, Mickey has Minnie, Donald has Daisy, but as far as I know, Goofy didn't ever really have much in the way of a love interest. And yet, of the three, Goofy is the only one in any continuity to have a child--they specifically made a point with Donald to have him only take care of his nephews.

So, basically, Disney made a point, with their three most iconic characters, to make the only one with a child be a single parent.

Just thought that was interesting.

To my knowledge, Goofy's wife was named Penny. However, I've never actually seen anything she was supposedly in, so yeah, for all intents and purposes, he is a single parent.

And huh, I guess he is the only parent, too...both Donald and Mickey have nephews but not children.

Hmmm! Some google-fu helped me find a little Penny, though it was only on a couple really obscure sites. Interesting.

Come to think of it, Goofy's also one of the big guys for Father's Day, #1 Dad, and all that commercial stuff, but I cannot for the life of me think of who it is for Mother's Day and the mother's side of things right now.

... Except maybe princesses and evil queens...

That's because Disney's take on mothers tends to be dead or evil step-based. Hrrm.

Maybe he is a widower. :(

Now I am picturing angsty stories where his wife dies and leaves him with a baby... about Goofy. X|

Wholly plausible, with Disney's take on moms...

I'm surprised there's not an episode of Goof Troop out there with Max wondering why he's not got a mom.

Figures it would have to be. Missing moms are always sad territory =(

So I have seen some of the old Goofy as a dad cartoons, and he DOES have a wife, but all those cartoons take place when Max is like...three. There was a big push for Goofy as the family man, but his wife was only ever shown from the neck down and she was always rotoscoped, sort of like whenever Tom or Sylvester's owners showed up.

I'm pretty sure he's a widower and his wife died when Max was little; that's the implication I get from Goof Troop, I think she comes up in conversation like once and Goofy just gets sad.

I want to say this is mentioned in the second Goofy movie (the one where Max goes to college), but I could be totally wrong.

This kind of reminds me of Chuckie and his dad in Rugrats. The mother's day episode where they actually address the fact that Chuckie's mom is dead always makes me bawl like a little baby (no pun intended).

Sometimes Goofy has a cow for a girlfriend in the really old cartoons, and also in Three Muskateers (a newer movie, I have it on DVD derp a derp).

I do remember the cow girlfriend from the early ones, but I was thinking they never made her really consistent. I hadn't seen the Three Muskateers one, though!

Yeah, the times they mentioned Chuckie's mom always made me super sad =( And there's a song about it in the Paris movie that I remember making me totally cry at the time.
